Even though I'm about 50 years older than the intended target audience, I thoroughly enjoyed this book myself before buying it for two of my grandchildren that are in the audience age range. They're not "into" writing reviews, so I speak for all 3 of us when I say that we enjoyed the characters and the mystery! I was actually reading it during the early part of September, and could relate from the very beginning to the "soggy hot" Oklahoma weather!! I have it on my list for Christmas for some nieces and nephews -- although I admit, as an old "page turner", I would prefer to see it in traditional book form, but I realize that I'm not totally integrated into the electronic age!Product details

Horsefly Hank and the Osage War Shield edition by David L Roper Children eBooks Reviews
Great suspense--and funny, too! As an Oklahoma girl, I also appreciated the colorful details of setting. I think both boys and girls will relate to this story and keep turning pages until the mystery is solved.
Just moving from Oklahoma last year, I was very in tune to the War Shield! I too, like the other readers am well past the target audience. Everyone can enjoy a great story with meanings that will take us through adulthood. I can see this book featured in classrooms with bulletin boards to match and book reviews and reports on different aspects of the history of the War Shield! I look forward to Horsefly's next adventure. Anita
Horsefly Hank is cleverly written and should appeal to both girls and boys. It's humorous with a lot of love, friendship and goodness Even though the setting is in 1945, it provides an element of historical character for everyone to enjoy.
This is a wonderful mystery story that captures and keeps the reader's attention from the first page. Hank is a character that almost any child can relate to with all of his flaws, yet he is a clever detective who ends up solving a mystery that saves both his family's reputation and his father's career. As a native Oklahoman, I enjoyed all of the references to landmarks and cities in Oklahoma as well as some great Oklahoma history. I would highly recommend this book for all upper elementary aged students (grades 3-6). ~Jean Davis, Library Media Specialist, Nicoma Park Intermediate School, Choctaw, OK.
Even though I'm well past the target age group for this book, I found it thoroughly enjoyable. The author has a real knack with words. The narrative fits the time period in which it was set very well. Mr. Roper has some excellent turns of phrase in the story and it's a compelling mystery. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the editing and proofreading were not up to what I consider publishable standards.
I recently read this book out loud to my family during a road trip. Even my older kids loved it! Readers can identify with Horsefly Hank as he solves mysteries, makes friends and deals with bullies. The characters are very realistic. They have flaws, just like we do. They make mistakes, take wrong turns, struggle to find answers, and learn some things along the way. A story the kids will enjoy reading!
